Day 20: The Transfiguration

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them… and from the cloud there came a voice, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!’  ~Mark 9:2-8

After months of traveling with Jesus, months of watching him cast out demons and heal the sick, after months of asking each other 'who is this?' (and less than a week after Jesus point-blank asks them "Who do people say that I am?) the disciples witness a dazzling scene. The glory of God--the "shekinah"-- shines out of Jesus. He is marked by the Spirit and affirmed as the Son of God.

It is an 'aha!' moment (or it should be, at least) where Jesus is recognized. A mountain-top experience which bring light into the world.

Who is Jesus? Who do people say that I am? The transfiguration says '"Behold! There should be no question! This man is The Christ"

...That same glory is later denied by Peter and crowned with thorns. later challenged, put on trial, and led away to crucifixion.

But not yet.

For now, the disciples experience God's power in trembling awe and wonder. They see Jesus in all his divine, transfigured glory. They see.

Prayer :

Father son and Spirit, Lord of life and light, transfigure me.
Shine into my soul and transform me. Into you.
I give you all praise! All glory!
Amen.
