Advent Day 13: Joy

Joy is the serious business of Heaven.
– C.S. Lewis
“Joy is about presence. The presence of those we love may come and go, but the presence of the One who loves us most never ends. (Hebrews 13:5)  Joy is associated with the word enthusiasm which comes from the Greek word en theos – in God. This is the very heart of the Christmas story- God with us and for us and in us. This is what makes the arrival of the Babe in Bethlehem tidings of great joy.”  ~Rev. Lisa Degrenia

Joy to the World:
The Story behind the Hymn

When Isaac Watts lived (1674-1748) hymns were mostly psalms set to melody. New Testament language was, thus, limited or absent from the singing.
"Joy to the World," is based on Psalm 98, (Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises). But where the psalm looks forward to the day when the Lord will come to judge the world in righteousness, Watts reinterprets the psalm to rejoice in the coming of the Christ as our Lord and savior:

Joy to the World , the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,

Joy to the World, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love.
