Week One: Mary, Mother of Jesus
This first week of Advent, we're looking at Mary.
What was her story? What were her thoughts and struggles? What does she mean for our own lives?
Throughout this week, we'll journey to the manger with Mary as she prepares the world for Christ's long-awaited coming:
What was her story? What were her thoughts and struggles? What does she mean for our own lives?
Throughout this week, we'll journey to the manger with Mary as she prepares the world for Christ's long-awaited coming:
- An angel visits her with strange news: Luke 1:26-38
- She runs to share the news with her cousin, Elizabeth: Luke 1:39-45
(Elizabeth has a great story too: check out Luke 1:5-25, 57-80) - She sings praise to God: Luke 1:46-56
If you have a nativity set, start setting it out with Mary. (or check out the kids corner tab to make/color your own).
Remember that Mary's story falls in line with generations of people who waited for Jesus to arrive in the world--just like we, as Christians, are waiting for Christ to come again and set everything right. Instead of rushing headlong into
the nostalgic beauty of the nativity story, Mary reminds us to slow down and prepare (after all, we have 4 weeks until Christmas, but Mary would've had 9 months!). We cannot rush
to the manger. We cannot skip God's story just to 'ooh' and 'ahhh' at a cute baby. We must ponder and reflect: What does it really mean for God to come into our lives?
